Why The Greek Freak Might Win The MVP Award Sooner Than You Think

Giannis Antetokounmpo has been a revelation in the NBA, especially this past 2016-2017 season where the Greek superstar delivered one highlight reel after another. His length and athleticism were in full effect; if Russell Westbrook had not developed into a phenomenal, record-breaking, triple-double machine, Antetokounmpo might have been in serious running for the MVP award.

Antetokounmpo, christened playfully and lovingly as the “Greek Freak” by fans and basketball aficionados alike, was named the league’s most improved player this past year, the hands-down choice for the award. The 6-11 monster guard-forward has great quickness to complement his electric offensive and progressing defensive skills. He is starting to grow out if his lanky rookie frame, too.

The Greek Freak averaged nearly a double-double in the 2016-17 season (22.9 points and 8.8 rebounds per game), with assists and blocks and turnover ratio also seeing improvements. He has proven to be clutch in the end-game, and managed to deliver lots of memorable games both leading to and in the NBA playoffs. He is a nightmare in transition and a daunting defensive assignment in the paint, as he can dunk with both hands, create space, and take flight with little momentum.

It’s no wonder that current MVP Kevin Durant from season champion Golden State unabashedly guaranteed that the Greek Freak will get the coveted award. And basketball analysts can’t help but agree, saying that Antetokounmpo just needs to develop a consistent outside shooting to make him unstoppable.
